FACT: Snow leopards do not roar even though they are part of the cat family
Snow leopards are large cats belonging to the Felidae family. They are solitary animals that are quiet, leaving only scratches and scrapings to communicate with other animals. They live in alpine areas around central Asia, and are a carnivorous animal.
Snow leopards are an extremely rare sighting, they prefer to make their homes in crevices or in the trees, and come down to hunt. It is estimated that there are only 6000 left in the world, the reason for this being that they are hunted for their thick fur coats and organs (which are used in traditional Asian medicines) plus loss of habitat.
However in December 2011, WCS managed to put satellite collars
on snow leopards in Afghanistan. Since being released, they have travelled over 100km each.
